Submarine cables form the invisible backbone of global connectivity, transmitting over 95% of international internet traffic and supporting critical energy infrastructure. Yet, they face growing risks from geopolitical tensions, environmental factors, and fragmented data management practices.
This project addresses these challenges by designing and developing a submarine cable management system that implements the IHO’s S‑100 standard for improved interoperability, geospatial accuracy, and regulatory compliance. The platform enables interactive visualization of undersea cables, stakeholder collaboration, and automated detection of spatial conflicts within maritime zones.
Built with OpenLayers, PostgreSQL with PostGIS, and a React-based interface, the system combines powerful spatial analysis with an accessible, user-friendly environment. A custom-built converter tool streamlines the transformation of legacy data into S‑100‑compliant formats, ensuring consistency across stakeholders and simplifying data exchange.
Through benchmarking and usability testing, the project demonstrates enhanced efficiency in data handling, visualization, and decision-making—supporting cable operators, hydrographic offices, and maritime authorities in safeguarding critical digital infrastructure.
